A Relaxed Woodland Wedding in North Yorkshire

Some places set the tone the moment you step onto the grounds.
Low Osgoodby Grange is one of them. Hidden in the quiet North Yorkshire countryside — just five miles from Thirsk and resting beneath the Hambleton Hills — it offers woodland vows, lakeside backdrops and striking giant tipis that feel effortlessly relaxed. Nothing forced. Nothing fussy. Just a beautiful setting for couples who want a day that feels personal and completely their own.
It was the perfect match for Holly and Josh.
The morning began quietly for Holly, getting ready with her bridesmaids in the onsite B&B at Low Osgoodby Grange. It was calm, bright and relaxed — the perfect backdrop for those gentle, unposed pre‑wedding moments. Just as she arrived on horseback, a sudden shower rolled in, transforming her entrance into something unexpectedly dramatic. The rest of the day stayed moody and atmospheric until the sun finally broke through later on, but spirits never dipped for a second. Josh turned up in a striking vintage Dodge from the 1960s, adding a burst of cool, retro energy to the countryside setting. And then came Holly’s entrance — riding through the rain towards the woodland ceremony — unforgettable, effortless, completely her. No one worried about the weather. Everyone simply leaned into the moment. Those few minutes of rain softened the whole landscape, giving the trees a cinematic glow and creating a sense of stillness that worked beautifully for documentary photography. Some entrances stay with you. This was one of them.
Why Low Osgoodby Grange is one of my favourite wedding venues
Low Osgoodby Grange remains one of those rare Yorkshire venues that still feels like a true hidden gem.
Spread across 250 acres of working farmland, with a private lake and uninterrupted countryside all around, it offers something genuinely different from the more polished, hotel‑style venues. The woodland ceremony area — a tucked‑away pergola glade beneath a natural canopy — is easily one of the most atmospheric spaces I’ve ever worked in. And the lakeside tipis bring a relaxed, informal feel while still giving the day a real sense of occasion.
What really elevates the experience, though, is the team. Charlie (there’s a brilliant monochrome shot of her enthusiastically pouring champagne later), her husband and her dad were incredible from start to finish. They created a warm, welcoming environment that never once felt rushed or pressured. Even with the forecast shifting throughout the day, everything ran smoothly and with complete calm.
For natural, documentary‑style photography, that kind of atmosphere is gold.
Relaxed Tipi Wedding Photography
As soon as everyone moved into the tipis after the ceremony, the whole day seemed to lift.
Right on cue, the sun finally broke through just as the evening reception began. After a day of moody skies and shifting light, that warm glow across the lake completely changed the feel of the place. Guests wandered outside with drinks, the tipis glowed softly, and the whole setting slipped into this relaxed, festival‑like rhythm.
It’s the moment Low Osgoodby Grange really comes into its own. With the lakeside backdrop, the open outdoor spaces and the slightly wild energy of the evening, it felt far more like a countryside gathering than a formal wedding venue.
The bucking bronco turning up later only added to the atmosphere.
There were heartfelt speeches, muddy shoes, huge laughs and emotional hugs as everyone took turns trying to stay on the bronco for more than a heartbeat. These are the moments I love capturing — unposed, unfiltered, completely real.
Some of my favourite frames from the entire day came from those little pockets of time: guests laughing by the water, people huddled under the fairy lights, quiet pauses as the sun dropped, and the joyful chaos around the bronco shortly after.
Those are the images that tend to matter most.
FAQ's – Low Osgoodby Grange Weddings
Where is Low Osgoodby Grange?
Low Osgoodby Grange is a countryside wedding venue near Thirsk in North Yorkshire, sitting at the foot of the Hambleton Hills on a 250-acre working farm. It’s about five miles from the town centre and — despite feeling genuinely tucked away — has solid transport links if you’ve got guests travelling from further afield. The private, rural setting is a big part of the appeal.
How many guests can Low Osgoodby Grange accommodate?
The Nordic tipis comfortably seat up to 120 guests for a wedding breakfast and can stretch to around 150 for the evening reception. The open outdoor spaces and fields around the lake mean the day never feels hemmed in, even at fuller capacities.
Is Low Osgoodby Grange good for outdoor ceremonies?
It’s one of the most unique outdoor ceremony spaces that I’ve photographed in Yorkshire. The woodland ceremony area has a pergola set into a hidden glade, with the tree canopy offering decent natural shelter — and a covered indoor alternative if things turn properly heavy. The lakeside setting is a second option for couples who want open countryside views and the hills as a backdrop instead. Both work brilliantly for relaxed, natural

What happens if it rains at Low Osgoodby Grange?
Worth knowing that even a brief spell of rain at the right moment can produce something genuinely special. At this wedding, it arrived perfectly timed — right as Holly rode in on horseback for the ceremony. The woodland looked incredible for those few minutes, and the rest of the day was atmospheric and overcast before the evening sun came through. The tipis are solid and warm, the covered walkways mean guests stay dry between spaces, and the outdoor areas are worth venturing into regardless. The venue actively tells couples to dress for the weather and lean into it rather than hide from it. Good advice. There is also options to hve the ceremony within the tipis themselves should the heavens open – Charlie has all your bases covered!
Tell me about tipi weddings at Low Osgoodby Grange?
Yes — the three Nordic tipis are the heart of the reception. Solid wood flooring throughout, long rustic tables, fairy lights, a wood-burning fire pit, a built-in bar and a proper sound system. The combination of the warm tipi interior and the lakeside setting just outside creates a festival atmosphere that’s very difficult to manufacture at a more conventional venue.
Does Low Osgoodby Grange allow you to bring your own suppliers?
It does. The venue operates as a blank canvas — couples aren’t tied to specific packages or a fixed supplier list, which tends to produce more personal, less generic weddings. That flexibility usually shows in the photography, too. Days built around what the couple actually want rather than a standard template tend to photograph better.
Do you photograph weddings at Low Osgoodby Grange?
Yes. As a Yorkshire wedding photographer covering North Yorkshire and beyond, venues like Low Osgoodby Grange are exactly what I enjoy most — enough atmosphere and space for things to unfold naturally, with a team who let the day breathe rather than run it like a production line. If you’re planning a wedding here and want relaxed documentary photography without the awkward posing, get in touch and tell me about your plans.
